Work has now been completed at a fourth school in the
Galle District. Mihiripenna School was used as a Tsunami camp for
several months and has taken on many children whose schools were
destroyed by the Tsunami. It was in desperate need of additional
classrooms and existing facilities needed to be adapted to accomodate
this.
Mihiripenna School is about 10 km from Galle and
now has over 320 children. It is an old school, originally built
in 1889. The numbers have gone up 45% since the Tsunami as Mihiripenna
has taken in children form other schools destroyed by the Tsunami.
The school offers children schooling from Grade 1-10. Twelve students
lost a parent in the Tsunami and many others lost their homes and
family income. Many of the families are dependant on fishing and
casual labour.
Senahasa has completed an extensive programme of work to upgrade
the facilities at Mihiripenna School. A new two-storey 90' x 25'
building houses 4 classrooms and an assembly hall. A class hall
has beeb partitioned to create four distinct classrooms and the
other old buildings have been refurbished. The grounds used to get
water-logged during the monsoon rains and so work was done to to
level them, put in drainage and tar some areas. New toilet facilities
were also built..
